Celebrating National Mermaid Day! (March 27, 2025)

Crystal:  I arrive as Sir Bob is crowing, the Lavender Orpington is running free, and three, four-legged beasts are chasing them.  Her bathing suit is peaking out from the cover up as she chases the entire brood. Her Mr. is also involved in the chase and spewing words of direction at her.   I LOVE my Sunday visits.  They are always filled with excitement.  Perched on the shore of Hood Canal, she maintains a small farm.  We could not be more different but so much the same.  City girl and country girl have a friendship made in heaven!  This entire scene makes my heart soar.

Jackie:  She arrives and parks in the only spot available, behind the adult swing set. Her arrival is ALWAYS exciting. Multiple canines attempt to enter her vehicle while sniffing her legs and wondering what she’s brought for them. I know they are asking her, “Do you have any bacon on your person?” I chase them off, and wrap my arms around her, thanking her for coming to spend this marvelous day with me! Brief moments pass before chaos ensues as Foxy the juvenile corgi has disassembled portions of the chicken run, and multiple fowl have escaped. Mr. J is yelling at dogs and attempting to direct chickens back into their habitat. It doesn’t go well. I tell him I want Sir Bob back in his cage to ensure I have fertilized chicken eggs to hatch in my classroom after spring break. I cannot disappoint the children! He becomes angry as I continue to capture Sir Bob. He then gives up and goes inside. I work together with the canines, except for Foxy, while we quickly herd the man chicken back to his girls. She closes the gate for me, and just like that my cock is safe. I locate the holes in the coop and notify Mr. J we need more zip ties. He opts to correct Foxy’s disasters.

Crystal:  Days on the canal are always relaxing and entirely what I need.  I “mention” a medical issue and her “Mr.” gives me tons of advice, complete with a website.  Always the same.  (He falls for it every time.) LOL!  We retire upstairs and lay out the options for these precious few hours.    Out of nowhere my stomach erupts with loud sounds of hunger.  She quickly assembles the charcuterie plate; we change and head to the hot tub.  A perfect few hours of hot soaking;  scrumptious eats;  fabulous view of the water with a gentle breeze and HER.

Jackie: We take our picnic to the hot tub where we chat about everything and nothing. While attempting to solve the problems of the moment, I ask her a question. “Do you know we missed National Mermaid Day?” She says she knows but we were so busy. We nibble on cheese, crackers, turkey, and apples, discussing how to properly celebrate National Mermaid Day. Soon enough I gather the tails from the cupboard in the garage, tucked away much too long. We squirrel into the monofins and do our best to raise up the two colorful fins into the blue sky. National Mermaid Day should be celebrated EVERY YEAR. It’s important to our wellness.

Crystal:  We celebrate our success at both having articles in the Summer issue of Bella Grace!  Quickly, her spidey skills detect I am struggling.  Gently, relentlessly, she encourages me to drink wine and talk.  I do not want to.  Talking doesn’t help any of the things I have to deal with.  However, she is patient and soon my mouth is telling things.  She listens.  She encourages me and soon I am moving on.  How does she do that?  LOL!  Soon the mermaid tails come out and we take pics.  We missed celebrating “National Mermaid Day” this week.  We are silly, but something about the laughter releases all the stress that has built up.  We retire back to the nest upstairs and decide to write.

Jackie: We laugh and splash with our tails in the sunshine of a March afternoon before the busy week begins again. I ask her what she wants to do next, and she says we should write about today. Of course I love this plan; so we go upstairs and WRITE ABOUT TODAY. And….. today was good. It was the beginning of coming out of the cave, the cave of winter, the cave of cancer, the cave of too much work and no play, the cave of darkness, and the cave of survival. Today was the beginning of moving further away from survival and a bit closer to THRIVING.

Stay tuned for more adventures!
